Are you planning to pay a visit to San Diego in the coming weeks? If so, you may want to join the droves of people who zip around on the electric scooters available for rent. This is a fun way to get around and lets you see all the sights up close and personal.

However, while electric scooters are fun and exciting, they can also be dangerous if you aren’t careful. Use the safety tips found here to ensure your trip is fun, memorable, and doesn’t end in an injury

 Try It First

If this will be your first time on an electric scooter, you may be surprised by how fast they can move. Before moving around on the streets, try riding it in a safe location to get used to how it goes and moves. Each brand of electric scooter operates differently. Because of this, taking it for a test ride is a great way to get to know how it feels and how to control it before starting your adventures.

Take Things Slow

Just like with any vehicle, you don’t want to go too fast. You can adjust the speed on an electric scooter, so make sure you ride slowly to stay safe.

Avoid Riding While Intoxicated

Even though using a scooter may seem to be a safe way to get around after you drink, it’s not. You need to avoid driving anything if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Be sure you have appointed a designated driver before going to the bar or using one of the main rideshare services available.

Only Allow One Rider Per Scooter

While scooting around with friends is fun, every rider needs their own scooter. If you try to scoot with two (or more) people on a scooter, you will make it more difficult to operate, and doing so may result in an injury.

Avoid Higher Traffic Areas

The biggest risk of riding an electric scooter is being struck by a vehicle. Because this is such a potential danger, you should try to stay away from busy roads and only use the scooter in areas where there is plenty of space for you to operate it safely.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings

Just like when driving a car, you need to pay attention to what is going on around you at all times while on an electric scooter. Make sure you are watching out for objects, traffic signals, uneven pavement, pedestrians, and, of course, vehicles. When you stay alert, you can avoid being involved in a serious accident that may result in an injury.

Staying Safe While Operating an Electric Scooter

If you want to stay safe while you operate an electric scooter, be sure to follow the tips and advice found above. Doing so will help you and others nearby remain safe. While riding an electric scooter should be fun and enjoyable, you need to make sure you aren’t putting yourself at risk of an injury.
